Well-known text (WKT) is a text markup language for representing vector geometry objects on a map. It is a mapping term new to me so this post tries to pull together some of its features and utilities.

• This Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well-known_text) describes WKT very fully
• If projection information comes in well-known text format in a .prj file you can convert it into standard EPSG codes (http://www.epsg.org/) (and here (http://spatialreference.org/)), as needed by GIS systems, using the Prj2EPSG (http://prj2epsg.org/search) service
