- maps published in or before 1954 are free of copyright
- government-published maps after that date are copyright for 50 years (so anything published prior to 1966 is ok to republish from 2016)
- non-government-published maps after that date are are copyright for 70 years (so are unavailable to republish without permission at the moment)
