This post lists miscellaneous resources that have not so far found a home elsewhere:
  • Britain from Above presents the unique Aerofilms collection of aerial photographs
  • TerraServer is a commercial website specializing in aerial and satellite imagery - view online for free
  • The GeoNames geographical database covers all countries and contains over eight million placenames that are available for download free of charge
  • John Krygier and Denis Wood‘s book called "Making Maps:a visual guide to map design for GIS" is said by some reviewers to be "quirky", but is a standard book for some mapping courses
  • John Krygier's blog has some interesting bits and pieces, but may not be very relevant for one-place studies
  • The Free Geography Tools blog looks as if it has been useful but it has not been active for a few years
  • The GeoCommunity is "THE place for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), CAD, Mapping, and Location-Based industry professionals, enthusiasts, and students to gather"
  • GIS courses are available from many places, eg
  • BostonGIS is "a testbed for GIS and Web Mapping solutions utilizing open source, freely available and/or open gis technologies (using mostly Boston, Massachusetts data examples)" - there are lots of examples, tutorials, tips etc about PostGIS, OSM, etc
