Historypin - tell the history of your local community
« on: 28 January 2016, 20:12:32 »
"Historypin is a way for people to come together to share and celebrate local history. It consists of a shared archive, a mutually supportive community and a collaborative approach to engagement with local history.

"It is a free website where anyone can upload and create collections of historical photos, videos and sounds."  They can be seen against a modern Google Map (and Streetview), and fade between them.

Here is one example of it its use for the Sourdough & Rye collection. "Like the great delis that once populated the Fillmore District, Sourdough & Rye is a place for the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish community to come together and connect through history and heritage. Share your photos, videos and audio clips and help us generate a grassroots history of Jews in the Bay. Or, explore our interactive map and dynamic archive to learn more about Bay Area Jewish history."

Here is another example, just looking at all the images for Cambridge, UK. Note the time slider on the left.

On a separate website for Smallford History (near St Albans) you can see their gallery of images either as images, or pinned on Historypin (where the timescale is at the foot of the map).
