Ways in which maps can exist

Physical maps can exist:
  • as physical printed maps
  • as pages or illustrations in a book
  • as physical hand-drawn maps
  • in other physical media, such as tapestry, carved wood etc
They can also be physical copies of any of the above:
  • photocopies
  • photographs
In electronic format maps can exist as:
  • images - in an image format such as jpg, pdf, png
  • raster GIS data
  • vector GIS data
