A web mapping service produced by Microsoft (previously Virtual Earth), similar to Google Earth/Maps. As a platform it also allows developers to create applications that layer location-relevant data on top of licensed map imagery.

Council planning and heritage GISes

In the UK, and many other countries, local authorities use various tools for planning and managing geographical assets - and some of them have made them available to the public to integrate with other data. This is not so much a technology as an approach not may be more relevant in some areas than others.

Google Earth/Maps and My Maps

Google Maps is very popular for route maps, and showing points of interest. Google Earth is similar but with more imagery and control. Both link to Street View. My Maps enables you to customise a map.

QGIS/GeoServer

This is the main combination we are exploring in 2016 for general use. It comes from the OSGEO (Open Source) movement and includes GeoServer for sharing geospatial data, PostGIS for storing it, and the desktop QGIS system.
