Examples of British council planning and heritage systems
« on: 26 January 2016, 06:44:59 »
Some examples include:
  • Bristol City Council's Pinpoint - allows users to locate on a map the nearest services (such as hospitals, dentists, cinemas, libraries etc), against the background of present day or historic maps
  • Cornwall interactive mapping - you can view maps and use the layers to view locations of schools, libraries etc
  • Dorset Explorer - gives access to a wealth of geographic information in and around Dorset, with an ever expanding list of over 100 layers, including Rights of Way and School Catchments, historic OS Basemaps from the late 1800s, High Resolution Aerial Photography from throughout the years, Digital Terrain Models and much more
  • Dudley Historic Maps - has tens of historic maps and aerial views, but in a dated viewer ( - no longer around?)
  • Kent Council Heritage Maps - shows Historic Environment Record (HER) information and other heritage datasets (Kent also has their Explore Kent site which is for current amenities
  • North Somerset has a Historic environment record map
  • Nottingham Insight is a shared evidence base, providing access to data about Nottingham City and its surrounding areas - interactive maps for the whole of Nottinghamshire are at Nottingham Insight Mapping, where you can draw/annotate the map and print it
  • Lancashire's GIS is called Mario and includes some historic maps
  • Suffolk Heritage Explorer - maps the heritage assets in Suffolk from their HER
  • Worcestershire County Council - provide a public service of map based information (they also have a special tithes mapping site)
For English heritage mapping a good starting point is the Heritage Gateway, which gives search access to local and national records on the historic environment - including many council and other heritage sites - National Heritage List, PastScape, National Trust, Images of England, Viewfinder, NMR Excavation Index, Parks & Gardens.

For Scotland there is the RCAHMS/Historic Environment Scotland PastMap system, for Wales there is Historic Wales, and for Northern Ireland their Environment Agency's system.
