Academic Historical Geography 2008, with some examples

One academic book that looks at historic mapping is "Commerce and Sociability in Small-town America: Explorations in Historical GIScience" by David Allen Fyfe in 2008, and has this chapter on Visualizing the geographies of past places.

He mentions The Valley of the Shadow (1993-2007), about two American communities during the American Civil War. The battle maps are animated, for example showing how different regiments moved during the battle. He also mentions the Salem Witchcraft GIS (2002) which is part of the Salem Witch Trials Documentary Archive.
