Well-known text (WKT) is a text markup language for representing vector geometry objects on a map. It is a mapping term new to me so this post tries to pull together some of its features and utilities.
- This Wikipedia article describes WKT very fully
- If projection information comes in well-known text format in a .prj file you can convert it into standard EPSG codes (and here), as needed by GIS systems, using the Prj2EPSG service
